Editorial policies

How the work is made.

What we publish, how it is checked, how we correct mistakes, and how we use AI tools.

Scope

The Tract publishes teaching material in clinical neurology for doctors, nurses and trainees, and plain-language health information for patients and families. It is not a protocol, and it does not replace clinical judgement, local guidance or current prescribing information.

Writing and review

Clinical content is written or edited by the editor, who is responsible for every page. Each clinical statement is tied to a named source — a guideline, a trial or a standard reference — and each page carries the date it was last reviewed. Where guidelines disagree, the page says so rather than choosing silently.

Contributed work is reviewed by the editor before publication and, where the subject requires it, by an independent clinician in the field. Reviewers are named on the page unless they ask otherwise. As the editorial board grows, contributed articles will move to formal double-blind peer review.

Use of AI

We use AI tools for layout and design, formatting, literature searching and reference checking, and as a drafting aid. The clinical substance — the facts, thresholds, doses, judgements and recommendations — is decided by people: the editor reads, checks and takes responsibility for every page, and every reference is verified against its source.

AI is never listed as an author, and we do not publish clinical claims that a person has not checked.

Two collections were drafted with substantial AI assistance and say so on their pages: the FEBN question bank and the article When the medicine runs out. Both are under line-by-line review by the editor; reviewed items are marked as they are completed.

Corrections

Errors are corrected as soon as they are confirmed. Substantive corrections — anything that changes a clinical fact, a dose or a recommendation — are listed with their date on the corrections page. Books are corrected by new versions under the same DOI. Report an error to contact@thetract.org.

Conflicts of interest and funding

The Tract has no funding, sponsorship or advertising. The editor declares no financial conflicts of interest. Contributors are asked to declare any relevant interest, which is printed with their work.

Case material is published only with the patient’s written consent (or that of their legal representative), or when it is fully de-identified so that no patient could recognise themselves. Images are checked for identifying features. Illustrative images are labelled as such.

Licence

Unless stated otherwise, content is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–NoDerivatives 4.0. You may share it unchanged, with credit, for non-commercial purposes. Translations and adaptations need written permission, which we are glad to give for teaching.

Privacy

There are no accounts, cookies or advertising trackers. We count anonymous page views with GoatCounter. Answers in the question banks, and anything typed into the patient pages, stay in your browser and are never sent to us.

Independence

The Tract is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the European Board of Neurology, the UEMS or any guideline body, and its board-preparation material contains no examination recall.
